Electric or Acoustic Guitar Lessons
Guitar has been my favorite instrument for as long as I can remember. Some of my fondest musical memories are of me learning how to play some of my favorite songs on my dad’s guitar before I had my own to play on. Being self-taught on the guitar also gives me first-hand experience of the challenges that come along with learning the guitar. My goal as a guitar teacher is to give students those same “lightbulb” moments that I had that helped me make progress but also maintain the passion for the instrument that I’ve had since the beginning of my journey on the instrument. Below are some things you can expect to learn when you take online guitar lessons from me. I teach lessons to children and adults, to beginner and advanced students.
Chords and Strumming
An important skill whether you want to be lead guitarist or rhythm guitarist. In our online guitar lessons I’ll show you how to play a variety of different chords and how to move your fingers between them. We’ll start with open chords and sometimes three-string versions of those open chords to help make them easier when you’re starting out. Later on we’ll learn how to play barre chords and when to use them.
In your guitar journey we’ll cover strumming techniques and patterns you can use to make your chords come alive and start to sound like music you hear out in the world. We’ll learn how different patterns can be appropriate for different styles of music and when to use them. I’ll also go into the basics of fingerstyle and how you can use that in your own music.
Reading Tabs/Lead Sheets/Music Notation
Having played the trumpet since 6th grade, reading music was one of the first musical skills that I developed. Though most guitarist don’t typically learn to read music, it is something I can teach to those who would like to learn it. Tabs and lead sheets are both very common ways that guitarists read/play music and is a big part of the way that I teach. Tabs are usually more useful for players who want to learn riffs or solos from popular songs where lead sheets are usually more common for strumming pop or singer/songwriter type music. Your own musical goals will determine which of these methods we will cover but I am knowledgeable in all three and am excited to teach any of it!
Scales And Music Theory
Learning scales on the guitar is essential for developing a strong foundation in music theory and overall guitar technique. Scales are the building blocks of melodies, riffs, and solos, and understanding them allows you to navigate the fretboard with confidence. As we dive into scales, you will improve your finger dexterity, timing, and coordination, which are crucial for playing complex pieces. Additionally, these scales will help you understand key signatures, which is vital for improvising music in different keys. Music theory can be intimidating but I will meet you where you are and make the process as easy as possible.
Soloing and Improvisation
Guitar solos are probably one of the most exciting elements of the instrument but also one of the most difficult. They are also one of the most common reasons that people pick up the guitar in the first place. Whether it’s playing legendary guitar solos of the past or creating solos of your own, I will give you the skills and technique you need to make that possible. We will learn about hammer-ons, pull-offs, tapping, and whatever other concepts you need in order to express yourself on the instrument the way you’ve always wanted to.
